Florida Safe Food Employee Training  

Mandated Training for all Employees*
The State of Florida requires all food service workers, often referred to as Food Handlers, be trained in safe food handling. Florida Statute 509.049 requires all food service employees who are involved in preparation, storage, or presentation of foods in regulated establishments to be trained and certified by an approved provider in the food safety standards adopted by the state. Certificates issued under these programs remain valid for three years.

  • All food service employees must complete approved training within 60 days of employment.
  • Licensed establishments must always maintain written documentation on the premises of food service employee training. The Department of Business and Professional Regulations reviews records periodically.
  • Training certification is valid for three years.

All food service employees responsible for storage, preparation, display, or service of foods in public food service establishments regulated by the Division of Hotels and Restaurants must be trained on the food safety standards set forth in Section 61c-4.023(6), Florida Administrative Code.

Education Programs is approved by the Florida Department of Professional
Regulation Division of Hotels and Restaurants for employee training.

The division will implement compliance with the statutory requirements in the following manner:
1. If no proof of food worker is present and/or inadequate information concerning the training is provided, a warning notice will be issued on this violation and
compliance with all food training requirements verified at a call back inspection in 14 days.
2. If the operator has not complied within 14 days, an administrative complaint may be issued to the establishment initiating disciplinary action against the
establishments license.
